About VAHS

The Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) was established in 1973 to address the specific medical needs of Victorian indigenous communities. The organisation has expanded steadily over past 40 years to provide a comprehensive range of medical, dental and social services for our community.

As well as providing a variety of medical services, VAHS is committed to supporting the well-being of the community through contributions to community events and activities. VAHS is also committed to assisting research into the ongoing needs of the community.

Our website is designed to provide information about the services and events offered by VAHS, as well as document the history, significance and ongoing development of the organisation.

VAHS Commemorative Poem

40TH Anniversary of VAHS – Three poems
By Joanne Dwyer 2014

Celebrating 25 Years
Many, many years ago some elders decided
That their people needed a meeting place
Where they could come and be united
So like animals are drawn to water holes
The people began to come
Gathering together like Honey ants
For there was much work to be done

Their aim was community control
To make decisions of their own
But it was more than just a meeting place
For many it was home
Slowly as the years passed by
It began to take its shape
Triumph and tribulation lying in its wake

Changing camp a new beginning
Though many hearts have cried
For the dedicated and community people
Who have left the camp or died

Good times are still celebrated
Hard times still take their toll
But the people have kept walking on
To new-found water holes

Five Years Later
While working towards our planned goals and dreams
Five years have passed us by
New water holes have been discovered
Some even created
While others have been left to dry

But unlike the Honey ant
We will take time to rest
Before travelling another mile
A time to reflect and remember those no longer with us
But who have made the journey worthwhile

Our work will continue along with their memory
For both are intricately tied
As we look back on thirty long years of history
We will continue forward with pride

40th Anniversary
We have come together from all different camps
To celebrate honour and share
Forty years of amazing achievements
Support and community care

Celebration, Reflection, Loss, Sadness, Change, Conflict, Regret, Hope
Are but a few words that come to mind
They are a steady stream of VAHS experiences
Woven throughout the years of time

Many have been extraordinary
While some at times, a mess
But we are not deterred by failure
It is simply a reminder of our success

New water holes still challenge us
But we are excited by their depth and size
There is nothing we cannot accomplish
Resilience is on our side

We will continue working towards our vision
The struggle is not in vain
Self- determination
Healthier families
Less suffering and less pain

We will be cautious of turbulent waters
Bitter seas will at times feel the norm
But we will continue caring for the community
For we are compelled to move forward
Like our ancestors before us
To deliver a perfect storm
