Native title is a property right which reflects a relationship to land which is the very foundation of Indigenous religion, culture and well-being. The non-discriminatory protection of native title is a recognised human right. Under the Native Title Act 1993, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner is required to prepare an annual report to the Attorney-General on the operation of the NTA and its effect on the exercise and enjoyment of human rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; and report, when requested by the Attorney-General, on any other matter relating to the rights of Indigenous people under the NTA.

The Vincent Lingiari Memorial Lecture commemorates the Wave Hill Station walk-off led by Vincent Lingiari with his Gurindji people and other groups in August 1966 – a significant act by those involved as it was a catalyst for Aboriginal people, not only in the Northern Territory but across Australia, to have their rights to traditional lands recognised and for those lands to be returned.

The Vincent Lingiari Memorial Lectures, run since 1996, have included presentations by Sir William Deane (1996), Gough Whitlam (1997), Galarrwuy Yunupingu (1998), Patrick Dodson (1999), Malcolm Fraser (2000) and Brian Manning (2002).

A new online portal for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. ABC Indigenous has replaced the pre-existing Message Stick gateway. The Indigenous portal was 'soft-launched' on Tuesday 2 June, 2008.

The portal is designed to reflect current issues in the Indigenous community. It is a highly informative, dynamic and interactive space, showcasing creativity, developing online communities, encouraging social engagement in a rich media, multi-platform environment, offering audio and video downloads and user-upload opportunities.
